Wrong-Way I-684 Driver Causes Head-On Collision, Police Say
A Carmel man is in critical condition after driving the wrong way on I-684, authorities said.
On Sunday, Dec. 18 at around 11:30PM, New York State Police say 30-year-old Steven Becerra of Carmel entered I-684 heading north on the southbound Exit 4 ramp. He traveled southbound on a section of the roadway in Bedford.
Michael Duffy, 42, of Yonkers was traveling south. He was unable to avoid the wrong-way vehicle driving north in the southbound lanes, authorities said. The two cars struck each other head-on.
Both men were brought to Westchester Medical Center, according to the new York State Police. Duffy was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Becerra is listed in critical condition at the hospital.
New York State Police did not release information on what led up to the wrong-way collision. The accident remains under investigation. New York State Police said they would release more information as it became available.
