A tornado warning has been issued for the Danbury area and most of Fairfield County.

According to the latest from the National Weather Service, Tuesday's tornado watch (August 4) was elevated to a tornado warning until 2:15 PM. The affected areas are central Fairfield County and other parts of southern Connecticut.

The NWS says a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado
was located near Norwalk, around 1:40 PM and is predicted to be moving north at around 70 miles per hour, with radar indicated some rotation.

In the warning residents are advised that, "flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely."

The National Weather Service went on to predict that the storm will hit the following areas accordingly:

  • New Canaan and Wilton around 1:45 PM EDT.
  • Ridgefield and Weston around 1:50 PM EDT.
  • Redding around 1:55 PM EDT.
  • Danbury and Bethel around 2:00 PM EDT.
  • Brookfield around 2:05 PM EDT.
  • New Fairfield around 2:10 PM EDT.
  • Sherman around 2:15 PM EDT.

Experts suggest that local residents "move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest
floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris."
