It was a page right out of War of the Worlds, only this time, it was real. Back in the mid-1980s, UFO sightings were reported on over fifty separate nights in the sky over Brewster and parts of the Hudson Valley.

There were over 9,000 eyewitness accounts of UFO sightings during an 18-month period, many of the which took place in June and July of 1984.

Here are some of the actual chronicles reported and archived to web.archive.org:

June 6, 1984; Pine Bush, NY
UFO investigators went to a UFO hot spot in Pine Bush, New York. A close encounter with a landed, delta-shaped UFO scared them away.

June 14, 1984; Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant

Guards at the Indian Point nuclear power plant spotted a dark disc-shaped object with lights, 30 feet in diameter, that stayed over the nuclear reactor for 15 minutes. It finally flew away toward the northeast.

June 24, 1984; Peekskill, NY

July 12, 1984; Hudson Valley, NY
It was a busy night for sightings in the Hudson Valley, hundreds of eye witnesses saw a number of small round lights which hovered, made abrupt right angle turns, disappeared and reappeared. The objects changed colors, made a faint humming sound, and moved from one shaped-formation to another.

July 19, 1984; Pound Ridge, NY

A huge boomerang-shaped object with lights running along its leading edge was seen flying over Pound Ridge.

July 24, 1984; Indian Point Nuclear Plant

A very large boomerang-shaped UFO hovered only 300 feet over the Indian Point Nuclear Plant cooling tower for 15 minutes. A number of the prison guards reported the incident.

July 24, 1984;  Brewster, NY

A videotape was made of a ring of lights in the dark sky over Brewster. The video revealed a dark circular, ellipsoid, or disc-shaped object.

Here's a short documentary that was done regarding the UFOs, and includes some of the eye witness footage and accounts of these alien objects:

If you lived in the area back then, the sightings became well known. Of course, there were those who tried to dismiss the objects as weather balloons or the more popular theory, which was a group of ultralight pilots flying out of Stormville Airport.
