A Connecticut State Trooper has been arrested as the result of an investigation regarding a recent car crash that police say he was responsible for.

As previously reported, 37-year-old Sergeant John McDonald was off duty on the night of September 25, 2019, when he was said to be driving his assigned cruiser after leaving a retirement party at Black Hog Brewing Co. in Oxford.

According to the Connecticut State Police, McDonald allegedly ran through a stop sign before colliding with a car carrying a woman and her daughter, who suffered injuries as the result.

An investigation into the matter was overseen by Connecticut State Police Major Scott Smith, the commanding officer of the central district, and outside supervision was provided by the State Attorney's Office.

Over the course of the 55-day investigation, several search and seizure warrants were obtained and executed, with video footage and witness interviewed being gathered in the process.

As the result, the 13-year state police veteran was arrested and charged with second degree assault with a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor and/or drugs, reckless driving and failure to obey a stop sign.

McDonald, who has been on paid administrative suspension since November 14, was processed and released on a written promise to appear in court on December 2.

As of this writing, police say the status of the investigation into the accident itself is complete, the criminal investigation has "reached a point where an arrest was made," and an internal affairs investigation is underway.

According to a report earlier this month, the family involved in the crash has filed a lawsuit that names Sgt. McDonald, the CT State Police and two people associated with Black Hog Brewing Co., seeking an undisclosed amount of damages for the injuries they suffered.
