New York State Giving Out Free Air Conditioners

New York’s Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently stated that $3 million has been set aside, for New York residents with health issues exacerbated by heat, and will become available to aid them with the purchase of an air conditioner. Applications are now being accepted for cooling assistance with the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) wherever social services can be obtained.

The governor said on his website:

When the heat and humidity of summer arrives, it's important that vulnerable New Yorkers are able to stay safe and comfortable in their homes...I encourage anyone with a medical condition that is worsened by high temperatures to apply now, so an air conditioner can be installed before the first heat wave hits.

In 2017, 4,000 qualified households got cooling assistance from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, the department that runs the program. Any households that currently get HEAP, and have at least one member that suffers from a documented medical condition, aggravated by extreme heat can get a free air conditioner.
