The Hummingbirds of 2024 Have Arrived in Connecticut

The event that makes every bird lover in the State of Connecticut cry out with joy has finally happened this week - The Hummingbirds of 2024 have arrived here in Connecticut.

According to the 2024 Hummingbird Migration map on Hummingbirdcentral.com, there were almost 50 separate Ruby-Throated Hummingbird sightings across all of Connecticut over the past week (April 16 - April 21, 2024). The majority of the reported sightings were South of I-84 through most of Connecticut. The shoreline seems to be the best spot to see them this week. Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds were reported in only four towns in Litchfield County - New Milford, Torrington, Woodbury, and Winsted.

Only three sightings have been reported in Fairfield County this past week - Weston, Danbury, and Newtown/Sandy Hook. North and East of New Haven looks to be Hummingbird Central at this moment, with numerous sightings reported in the past 5 days in Branford, Haddam, New London, and along the Rt. 9 corridor up into the Middletown area,

The question that I've seen asked frequently among fellow hummingbird admirers is: What should I put in my hummingbird feeder? I've seen the poor little dead hummingbird photo with it's tongue sticking out, just like you, so here's some hummingbird feeding advice from audubon.org - The best and least expensive solution for your hummingbird feeder is a 4:1 mix of refined white sugar and tap water. Mix 1/4 cup of refined white sugar and 1 cup of water, bring the solution to a boil, let it cool, and you're good to go. Don't be too disappointed if you don't have many visitors, my next door neighbor in Waterbury has added 5 feeders to his collection this year, and hasn't had one stop by yet.
