Olympia Sports will soon close seventy six of its nationwide locations, eight in Connecticut and one right here in Danbury.

According to a press release from the sports chain these are the locations going out of business right here in the Nutmeg State:

  • Danbury Fair Mall, 7 Backus Avenue, Danbury
  • Fairfield Plaza, 116 Danbury Road, New Milford
  • Sand Hill Plaza, 228 South Main Street, Newtown
  • Compo Shopping Center, 403 Post Road East, Westport
  • Branhaven Plaza, 1060 West Main Street, Branford
  • Bristol Commons Mall, 123 Farmington Avenue, Bristol
  • Killingly Commons, 2129 Killingly Commons Drive, Killingly
  • Eastbrook Mall, 95 Storrs Road, Willimantic

In preparation, the company will attempt to sell off as much inventory as possible with a "store closing" sale that began today (November 1). Olympia was recently purchased by a company called JackRabbit, who will continue to operate stores under the name Olympia Sports, but the stores being closed were not part of that sale.

It's sad to see any brick and mortar go away. In the old days, we hated the chains and fought to "shop local" and now it's sad to see the big retailers go because soon, everything will be purchased online. When are we ever going to leave our houses and use these legs? This is why leg day at the gym is more important now than ever before.

I wonder if "Eck" will swing by to pick up some discount "sweats" before they close up shop?
