Danbury Football Star’s NFL Journey Takes Another Twist

For Danbury High School football standout Austin Calitro, just being in the NFL is a dream come true, now his career has taken another twist.

After graduating from Villanova, Austin started out his NFL career with the New York Jets, bounced around a bit, but found a home last season with the Seattle Seahawks.

Austin took Seattle by storm during the 2018 season. According to newstimes.com, in 16 games. which included five starts for the Seahawks, Calitro tallied 45 tackles and half a sack. An injury to Seattle's All-Pro middle linebacker Bobby Wagner opened up the door for Colitro, who even led the team with 25 tackles this preseason.

However life in the NFL can be very unpredictable. Saturday, in order to trim the team roster down, Austin was released from the Seahawks, but according to reports, on Tuesday he was claimed by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

So what happened in Seattle, according to Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll it had nothing to do with Calitro. Carroll told reporters that "It’s just numbers and we just couldn’t hold onto him. We wanted to, we love him, we love the way he played, he had a fantastic preseason for us. That was a real hard one.”

So now as Calitro packs his bags and heads south, he'll be playing for a team that was 5-11 last year, and opens up the 2019-2020 season at home in Jacksonville this Sunday against the Kansas City Chief's.
