Germaphobes, you are about to enter a whole new level of travel anxiety. A study conducted by the University of Nottingham and the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare have just concluded and published a study on the spread of viruses in airports. You might think that the bathroom is the place where the most disease can be picked up, and guess what, you would be wrong.

Are you ready for this?

It looks like those security bins carry a lot more than just your change and your cell phone. Using Helsinki-Vantaa airport as their test subject, researchers found the highest concentration of viruses on those little plastic boxes where you put your stuff in to send through the X-ray machine. The most common virus found was the rhinovirus aka the common cold, but influenza A was also found.

Pathogens were also detected floating around the air, in payment terminals, stairwell railings, passport counters, and children’s play areas. Surprisingly, the public toilet areas were free of respiratory viruses.
