Lots of us have outdoor plans, especially for Memorial Day Weekend, which is just around the corner. Forewarned is forearmed, so we ask the question: should we be stocking up on extra citronella candles before next weekend? Are the mosquitoes worse here than everywhere else or is it just me?

How do we here in Western Connecticut and the Lower Hudson Valley fare as far as mosquitoes this year? I did a little digging around, and found a list compiled by Orkin, which ranked the US cities that need servicing the most, and we’re NOT on it thankfully, but nearby cities are.

While Atlanta was the number one city, New York City and Hartford Connecticut may present us with cause for concern. New York was number 4, and Hartford, Connecticut was 31 on the list.

As an ounce of prevention, Orkin recommends we take the following precautions this Spring and Summer:

  • Get rid of any standing water in buckets etc.
  • Replace water in bird baths and fountains every week
  • Be sure pool water continually circulates
  • Clean gutters
  • Trim shrubs and dark areas where mosquitos may rest
