Solar Project for Candlewood Mountain Still Being Considered in New Milford

What's wrong with placing 60,000 high wattage solar panels on Candlewood Mountain in New Milford?

According to a News Times article, a company out of Massachusetts called Ameresco Candlewood Solar is back in the spotlight with a new scaled-down plan to install a 20-megawatt solar farm on Candlewood Mountain.

The Connecticut Siting Council is an organization based in New Britain that evaluates applications for energy, telecommunications, and hazardous waste projects. They will make a decision on the proposal no later than Dec. 22, 2017. Here's an example of what building a 20-watt solar farm will look like:

A group called Rescue Candlewood Mountain vehemently opposes the building of the 20-megawatt solar farm, saying that destruction of 70 acres of trees will have environmental consequences for generations to come. Other reasons they gave for nixing the project were:

1. Destroying the trees would harm the wildlife.
2. Would allow for stormwater runoff that would harm the water quality and create erosion.
3. It would take away from the natural beauty of the mountain.

The supporters of the project have laid out the advantages of building a solar farm:

1. The benefit of solar energy
2. The $2.7 million the project would produce in revenue for New Milford.
3. The land is zoned for multi-family dwellings.

The next hearing concerning the proposed project will be held at 11 am at the Siting Council offices in New Britain. What say you, New Milford? Yes or No?
