A woman was attacked and bitten by a rabid fox. When she fled into her Hudson Valley home, the animal chased her inside her home.

On Saturday around 5:45 p.m., the woman was outside her home on Agor Lane in Mahopac when a gray fox emerged from the woods and attacked her.

The animal bit her on the left ankle and clawed her right ankle and foot, drawing blood, police say.

When the woman ran into her home to try and get away from the fox, the animal chased after her and followed her into the home where children were located.

The woman and the children then fled from their house and closed the door behind them, locking the fox inside the home.

The woman was given first aid for her bite and claw wounds and was taken to Putnam Hospital Center in Carmel for more treatment.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the New York State Environmental Conservation Police responded to the scene and captured the fox, which will be tested for rabies. However, Dyckman’s Wildlife Control tells Hudson Valley Post that they were the ones who actually removed the fox and submitted it for rabies testing.

Update: The fox tested positive for rabies. According to CBS, it’s the second rabid fox found in Putnam County in the last week.
