According to the News Times, New Milford residents are no longer allowed to get free sand from the sand pile at the Public Works Department. For a long time now, it has been OK to go get sand to put on slippery surfaces during snow and ice storms in New Milford. The sand was made available to the residents with the idea of making it easy to keep residents safe from slippery surfaces.

The problem came in when people started taking more than their fair share, like whole truckloads instead of the intended bucket per person. The whole thing was on the honor system, and apparently, some people were lacking in honor. The town will still make free sand available to residents who live along public sidewalks.

This is why we can't have nice things. You make something free on the honor system and people get fully carried away. I mean, how much sand does one family need? Are you building a Geico commercial-sized sand castle on your front lawn? Let's keep it nice, people.

I move out of New Milford and the whole operation falls apart. You think I would have allowed this? If I was still in power in New Milford, this would not stand. You would have so much sand, you would not know what to do with it. Next time you get greedy, just remember what a dark day today was. Let's get our act together, you sand baggin' S.O.B's.
