The Newtown Legislative Council has voted to demolish the final property involved in the 2012 Sandy Hook Massacre.

The Town acquired the property in December and will preserve it as open space, according to NBC Connecticut.

Adam Lanza shot and killed his mother in the home before heading to his own former elementary school to murder 20 children and six teachers. CNN reports that Sandy Hook Elementary School was demolished in 2013 and is being rebuilt, according to Newtown’s website.

About $29,000 from an insurance fund set up after the shooting will be used to raze the property. The Town is also considering adding language to the deed that would ensure that any future proceeds from the sale or development of the land would go to victims of the massacre. Lanza’s brother, Ryan Lanza, donated the property to the Town.

The home could be torn down as early as spring. Various news organizations have reported that neighbors are happy to see that the home will no longer be a reminder of the tragedy or attraction to the curious.
