Newtown Police: Resident Arrested for Making Bombs After 3 Month Investigation

An investigation by a very vigilant Newtown Police Officer has led to the arrest of a local man for allegedly manufacturing pipe bombs.

According to a press release by the Newtown PD, 67 year old Newtown resident Larry Bailey was taken into custody this morning. Bailey's arrest came after a criminal investigation that started back in March of this year.

In March, Bailey called the Newtown PD to report that his vehicle had been vandalized. During the initial investigation of that incident, Officer Pirhala saw what appeared to be two possible pipe bombs in Bailey's posession. The area was safely evacuated, and with assistance from superior officers, the FBI, and the CT State Police Bomb Squad, the objects were removed, and destroyed.

After further testing on the remnants of the found objects, it was shown positively that materials were present that were both highly flammable, and contained likely explosives.

More investigations and interviews commenced. During which a number of suspicious items were uncovered. This led the investigators to charge Bailey as the bomb maker.

Bailey has been charged with Illegal Possession of Explosives (Manufacture of Bombs), 1st Degree Reckless Endangerment, a one count of False Statement.

Bailey has been held on a $50,000 bond, and has been transported to Danbury Superior Court to face the charges.
