Latest Storm Update for Greater Danbury / Putnam County, Hazardous Weather Outlook

After nearly a full week of going back and forth with flip-flopping forecasts, meteorologists say they have a good grasp on how things are going to go for the next 24 hours or so. The serious mixed signals may be over, but now it looks like we're in for some serious mixed precipitation.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning will go into effect at noon on today (January 19) and will stick around until 6:00 PM on Sunday. That's right about the time the blood pressure will be rising for the Kansas City defense as they prepare to go after Tom Brady's head in the AFC Championship.

The NWS says that we can expect some light snow after 5:00 PM this afternoon, but nothing significant until later tonight when the snow will begin to pick up before 2:00 AM, then a heavy mix of more snow, freezing rain and sleet will result in 4 to 8 inches of accumulation. It will be very icy - it may be the perfect time to climb into the attic to grab your old football cleats from high school. They believe Putnam County will get hit the hardest.

For Championship Sunday, the freezing rain and sleet will continue before 2:00 PM. In the morning, the temperature will rise a bit to about 32 degrees before falling into the 20s as the day goes on. The wind will pick up too, with gusts that could get up to 28 mph.

Then as we head into Dr. Martin Luther King Day, we could see flash freezing from late Sunday night into Monday morning, with possible wind chills of 15 to 20 degrees below zero.
