Immaculate Boys Cruise to Victory in State Championship Game
The Immaculate High School boys' basketball team won their second State Championship in the last three years Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Mustangs took care of the only team that was standing between them and another state title, and easily defeated Amity 53-34.
Both teams started the game slowly and Amity took a early lead, but by mid-way through the second half Immaculate turned it on and never looked back, leading the game the rest of the way. Immaculate Head Coach Nelson Mingachos told newstimes.com that he knew his team was ready for the big game.
We knew we were ready. At the walk through this morning I knew they were ready; when you’re with the kids this long, you just know they’re ready to go.
Mingacho's rode his starting five through the season in which the Mustangs compiled a 21-5 overall record. The fabulous five of Jack Woods, Quinn Guth, Mike Basile, Isaiah Payton and Ronan Doherty, who each played all but one of the 32 minutes, lead the Mustangs to their second state crown behind a 53-34 win over Amity.
Once again after the victory Coach Mingacho's summed it up best:
I would go in a dark alley with those five kids any day and battle anyone, We do what we do best; spread teams out, attack the gaps and get our kids from the outside to hit 3-pointers.
