Governor Andrew Cuomo made the official push to have recreational marijuana legalized in New York State.

On Monday, December 17, 2018, Governor Andrew Cuomo proposed during his state of address to New York legislators that recreational marijuana become legal.  NBC News reports that it was outlined as one of Cuomo's legal priorities.

According to NBC News, Governor Cuomo is seeking to legalize recreational weed by early 2019. In 2018, Cuomo ordered the New York State Department of Health to conduct a study about the impact and viability of legalizing pot in New York. The outcome of the study was that legalizing marijuana had more benefits, like taxation and regulation, than negative effects on the state all around.

If passed, New York would be the eleventh state to legalize recreational marijuana. Alaska, Colorado, California, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Vermont and the District of Columbia have all legalized recreational pot, according to NBC News.
