I try to pass along as much information from the Food and Drug Administration about safety recalls. This instance is all about Connecticut receiving a big chunk of change towards food safety.

If you've ever gotten sick from a tainted, or bad piece of produce, you know how awful it can be. Food safety at the source is imperative, and with that in mind the FDA has announced a program to improve food safety efforts in states all around the country, with Connecticut being one of them.

The announcement came from FDA Commissioner Scott Gotleib, M.D. on the fda.gov website:

More than 3,000 Americans are estimated to die each year from foodborne illnesses and many more are hospitalized and sickened. Yet most of these illnesses and deaths are preventable. While the U.S. has one of the safest food supplies in the world, Congress entrusted the FDA with new authorities and resources – as part of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) – to update and strengthen the FDA’s risk-based approach to the oversight of food safety. The new funding the FDA is announcing today is a key part of the success of this program and the agency’s collaborative efforts with state-based programs. We look forward to continuing our work with states and all those who grow fruits and vegetables covered by the rule to improve produce safety, consistent with the mandate Congress gave the FDA under the new law

How much is Connecticut due to get?  $638,477 is the amount published, along with what 48 other states will receive, in the grants portion on fda.gov

Any move to keep the locally grown fruits and vegetables that we consume, safe, in my mind, is a great move.
