What happens when you're an incredible high school wrestler and basically, have captured all the local and regional titles that you could? Well, for Danbury's Jakob Camachio, you set your sights on the national level.

Already an FCIAC, Class LL, State Open, and New England Champion, the Danbury High School wrestling standout conitinued his natural progression with yet another championship. This time, on a larger scale.

Last weekend, Jakob competed in the Super 32 National Tournament held in Greensboro, N.C. The Super 32 is one of four premier national tournaments that attracts many of the top wrestlers from around the country. Now, Camachio has been down this road once before. Back in March, he competed in the FloNationals and placed second, but that just left a bad taste in his mouth. Jakob was on a mission, and that was to grab his first national title.

After some grueling quarter and semi-final rounds, Camachio made it to the finals and talked to newstimes.com about the pressure he was facing to try and achieve his goal:

All eyes are on the final, there are wrestlers and parents on all four sides of the mat, and of course the stands are full. I just tried to make myself at home out there.

Whatever he did to prepare physically and mentally for the match must have paid off. Camacho beat Pennsylvania’s Beau Bartlett by a 6-4 decision to earn the title belt.

So what did the win mean to Jakob? Well, he became the first high school wrestler from Connecticut to win a national championship since 2003, and he also became the first public school student to ever accomplish the feat:

It means the world to me, I put in countless hours, and days; most of my life to winning. It meant a whole lot to me to accomplish this dream.

Camacho has already committed to wrestle at North Carolina State next season after he finishes his senior year at Danbury High School. Ironically the North Carolina State campus is just about an hour away from where Jakob just accomplished one of his dreams, to win a National title.
