It's one of the biggest parades in the area, and it's an annual tradition in Danbury and it's happening again Monday.

The Danbury Memorial Day Parade happens Monday at 9:30 a.m.

The parade route starts at Kennedy Park and heads down main Street to Rogers Park. Following the parade, parachutists will descend onto the baseball field just past the review stand, then a Ceremonial Service will be held at the Rose Memorial Garden to honor all veterans, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

Here's a little history about Memorial Day that you can amaze your friends with this weekend.

Initially called Decoration Day and created to honor Union Army soldiers and officers killed during the Civil War, the holiday was renamed and expanded to include all those killed in military service to the United States after World War I.

A 1971 federal law fixed the date on the last Monday in May, creating a three-day holiday weekend.
