Students at Danbury High School joined students from across Greater Danbury and the Hudson Valley in a nationwide walkout to show solidarity with students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and to protest gun violence.

In what was billed as National Walkout Wednesday, thousands of students, who have had enough of these violent school attacks, stood up in their classrooms and walked out of their schools in a nationwide demonstration, just one month after a gunman killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

According to newstimes.com, over 1000 Danbury High students staged one of the many peaceful protests in the area. Students from Newtown and New Milford also left their classes at 10 am to stage protests sanctioned by administrators, while schools in Bethel and Ridgefield included student-led events.

Thanks to Emanuela Palmares of Danbury who captured the DHS protest and allowed us to use her video:

During the 17 minute walkout, students at Danbury High signed a banner to send to Parkland, read short bios of each victim, and sang "Amazing Grace."

In Newtown, where the students are all too familiar with school gun violence, youth leaders made their voices heard, and hundreds left their classrooms holding signs and posters, and chanting "We Want Change", "Don't Back Down", and "Enough Is Enough".

There were also protests scheduled in Putnam and Dutchess Counties at these area schools:

  • Beacon High School
  • Brewster High School
  • Carmel High School
  • Fishkill
  • Lagrangeville/Arlington High School
  • Mahopac High School
  • Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham High School
