A 25-year-old Wolcott man will spend the next six years in prison for several counts of arson, including a charge of trying to set a local restaurant ablaze using an accelerant.

Rep-am.com reports that the sentence was handed down on Monday to Scott Basile, who is accused of firebombing Fratelli’s Pizza in Waterbury. Five arson incidents at the pizzeria led police to set up surveillance on site on Christmas Day. Their efforts paid off when Basile allegedly arrived with a 20-pound propane tank and some Molotov cocktails. When he saw police, he took off and sparked a manhunt by detectives from Norwich, Willimantic, New London, Cheshire, Stamford and New York. Basile was captured in New Jersey.

Attorney John Cizik is representing Basile and claims that his client is mentally ill and thinks that his food was tampered with. He stated that Basile believed that metal was slipped into his pizza which led to the arson incidents. As part of a deal with Waterbury Superior Court, Basile pleaded guilty to commit first degree arson.

Judge Jon Alander handed down the 6-year prison term after Basile refused to speak at his sentencing. Once released, he will then have 14 years of parole.
