This weird Summer of 2017 weather has brought the closure of some local swimming places.

I’m not going to rant about the weather. I’m just going to say that this Summer has been different. Days of high temperatures followed by days of rain is pretty usual. Only this summer we haven’t gotten a lot of tropical type rain storms. We’ve gone from heat wave days, to rain with temps that are rather cool.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection updated its state wide closures as of Sunday Aug. 6, and it shows six state parks closed to swimmers, with one of them being Kettletown State Park in Southbury. The swimming area was ordered closed because of blue-green algae blooms in the water. While they say that the blooming is a natural process, it also releases a toxin harmful to humans into the water. Kettletown State Park remains open, but the swimming area will be closed until conditions improve.

The DEEP website states that water quality information is updated Friday afternoon and then again starting on Mondays. For the most up-to-date information on the status of beaches over the weekend, you can always call the Water Quality Report Information Line at 1-866-CTPARKS.
