Study Says Too Many People in Danbury Live Below the Poverty Line
Meet the ALICE household: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.
"ALICE" was formulated by the United Way and identifies over 40,000 families in Western Connecticut that are barely getting by, even though they work full time.
According to the report, these households struggle to pay for necessities, which include basic family needs such as food, housing, child care, health care, and transportation. These families are not living off the U.S Government. They work hard and come from all walks of life. The United Way sponsored study about ALICE households reports:
Many ALICE households continue to face challenges from low wages, reduced work hours, depleted savings, and increasing costs.
The cost of the family budget has increased by 23% from 2010 to 2016. In Connecticut, 45% of jobs pay less than $20 per hour.
