Mosquitoes are not just a nuisance, they can be deadly. The Connecticut Department of Public Health has confirmed that two Connecticut residents have tested positive for West Nile virus.

In a press release, CT DPH reports that neither of the two individuals, one from Fairfield and one from Newington, travelled outside of Connecticut before contracting the infection. They are between the ages of 60 and 79 years of age and are recovering from encephalitis.

Since 1999, there have been 134 human cases of The West Nile Virus in Connecticut. Although 80% of people do not develop any symptoms, 20% become symptomatic with fever and more. West Nile Virus can be fatal, three Connecticut residents have died from the infection.

Keeping mosquitoes at bay is crucial. Get rid of standing water around your home and wearing mosquito repellant is a great place to start. The Connecticut Mosquito Management Program provides many ways to avoid these horrible creatures (ugh, can you tell how much I hate them?!)
